WASHINGTON - Congressman Leonard Boswell upped the ante against sex offenders
Tuesday with the passage of an amendment to the Science-State-Justice Commerce
appropriations bill currently being debated in the House of Representatives.
Boswell spokesman Eric Witte said in a phone interview that the amendement to
the appropriations bill was approved by a voice vote on the floor of the House.
Under the amendment, an additional $2.5 million will be appropriated to help
fund the criminal records upgrade program. The program, according to a press
release from Boswell's office, allows law enforcement access to accruate
records, including sex offender registry requirements.
"Ensuring our law enforcement community has access to up-to-date information, as
well as the ability to provide information in an effective manner to other law
enforcement agencies, is critical to keeping our kids and communities safe,"
Boswell said.
The release said the amendment would work hand-in-hand with legislation
introduced in the House last month by the Iowa congressman. That bill would
provide $300 million to help states, such as Iowa, with implementing and
maintaining state sex offender registries. Boswell's Safe Children, Safe
Communities Act, in addition to several bills Boswell has co-sponsored,
increases the penalties for sex offenders, and are part of his initiative to
keep communities safe from sexual predators.
