Jail sentence increased for 'calculating sexual predator'
The Court of Criminal Appeal has added five
years to the sentence given to a Sydney man who kidnapped and raped two teenage
girls.
In April 2003, Mark Anthony Reyes abducted an 18-year-old woman from Liverpool,
and threatened her with a knife.
Over the next 20 hours he repeatedly sexually assaulted her, injected the
teenager with amphetamines and forced her to withdraw money from her bank
accounts.
The following week, he told a 16-year-old girl he was an undercover police
officer, before committing several assaults against her.
Reyes was originally sentenced to a maximum of 13 years in jail, but the Court
of Criminal Appeal has upheld a prosecution appeal that it was too lenient, and
increased the maximum term to 18 years.
The court described Reyes as a calculating sexual predator and said the sentence
needed to act as a deterrent to the community.
